Bring It Back

Release Date: March 21, 2006
No format available

Mates of State's unique, often complex and always catchy pop gems defy genre boundaries. The band is the husband/wife duo of Kori Gardner (organ, vox) and Jason Hammel (drums, vox), who quit their day jobs (teacher and cancer researcher) in 2001, got married, and hit the road bringing their love to the rest of the world. Mates has released three previous full-lengths on Polyvinyl. Though a duo, they never fail to generate an abundance of melody and harmony via monster, bassheavy organ, creative drumming, and alternately lushly layered and playfully dueling vocals. Bring It Back is Mates of State at their complex yet lighthearted best: impeccably layered music that rewards attention, analysis, and repeated listens - but that's also instantly enchanting, drawing you in at once with hook stacked upon incredible, undeniable hook.

Polyvinyl is releasing the ultradeluxe vinyl version pressed on 180-gram vinyl and packaged in a beautiful gatefold jacket, while Barsuk is releasing the CD version.

Reviews

  • BringIt Back plugs into the best of Californian poptraditions, paying homage to everyone from The Beach Boys and The Turtles tomodern-day pace setters such as Spoon…arrangements are straightforward, leanand cut down to pop perfection. Indie pop, there’s a new heavy-hitter in theball game. Mates of State is its name.

    - R. Paul Mathews, Aversion.com
  • [They] spruce up their cutesy indie pop withgrander melodies, gigglier choruses, and a wider variety of sounds.

    - Spin
  • The songs skirt the edge of cute, but Gardner and Hammel's forthrightness andskillful arrangement keep them from becoming too sugary.

    - AV Club
  • Plucky, precious and sometimes cloying, their fourth album unfolds like a fussed-overvalentine.

    - Christian Hoard, Rolling Stone
  • ... the album sports stronger songs, a fullersound, more emotional weight, and an exuberant soul that spills out of thespeakers like milk and cake at a kid's birthday party. It's hard to pinpointwhat makes this record more satisfying than the rest of their excellent backcatalog. Perhaps it is the reliance on more piano than usual, maybe the richervocals of Gardner, maybe the punchy and powerful production from BillRacine, or that the band has added some guitar and bass to their sound. It's a combination of all that, but most of all it's the number of memorable songs, which count among some of thebest of their career.
