All good podcasts must come to an end. This week we wrap up The Polyvinyl Podcast with Episode 5, which focuses on the label’s most recent projects. Hosted by Fred Thomas, The Polyvinyl Podcast, chronicles PV's evolution as a record label over the last quarter of a century. What began as an idea in the heads of two excitable music fans grew into one of the more versatile and artistically driven record labels of its kind, working with a roster of well over 100 artists and consistently pushing independent music in new directions.
In Episode 1 we meet our founders, Matt & Darcie Lunsford, and travel back with them to before the label existed, when they were publishing zines and putting on shows in their small Midwestern town in the early ’90s. Episode 2 saw Polyvinyl begin to branch out, in both style and region, working with unconventional indie rockers Aloha, as well as pop bands Mates of State, Saturday Looks Good To Me, and of Montreal.
Episode 3 the label starts seeing the effects of the internet firsthand, including interviews with Japandroids, STRFKR, Deerhoof, and Xiu Xiu. In Episode 4 we learn the story behind American Football's timely reunion, as well as welcome Alvvays - who would eventually release two of the most beloved and highest streamed albums in the label’s catalog – to the PV family.
In our final episode we chat with Jeff Rosenstock about the surprise-release of his PV debut POST-, catch up with Detroit’s Anna Burch about her intro to the label, and hear about a fateful YouTube comment left on a Kero Kero Bonito video from Polyvinyl’s Marketing Director, Natalie Dávila. Featuring additional interviews with Julia Jacklin, Anna Burch, Gus Lobban (Kero Kero Bonito), Jeff Rosenstock, Matt & Darcie Lunsford, Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes), Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids), David Bazan (Pedro The Lion), Laura Jane Grace, Elise Okusami (Oceanator), Ellen Kempner (Palehound, Bachelor), Melina Duterte (Jay Som, Bachelor), and Charlotte Cornfield.
