Diane Coffee hits the road with New Pornographers next week – listen to "The Letdown"
In anticipation of their forthcoming tour dates with The New Pornographers, the ever-evolving spectacle that is Diane Coffee has announced a brand new single, their first since 2019's Internet Arms – "The Letdown". Explaining the origins behind the new track, Diane Coffee singer/songwriter and band leader Shaun Fleming shared the following –
“I originally wrote “The Letdown” while writing for Internet Arms, but I held it back because the sound and themes felt separate from the album. This song always stood out to me though, so I felt compelled to revisit it with the help of co-producer Tim Smiley and Lvcky Dave (Bryce Vine), who updated the beat. The song is about the confrontation between the generation of new and the generation of old, a forcible ”passing of the torch” with the assistance of time, somewhat inspired by the recent "Ok Boomer" sentiment. The message is meant to be positive though, with the intention of lifting up those who feel hopeless.”
Formed, or rather, conceptualized in 2012, "Diane Coffee" has served as the bombastic alter-ego of the now Bloomington, Indiana based Shaun Fleming. After releasing the 2017 Peel EP, Fleming shifted gears, both stylistically and in sound, for the electro-pop and new wave drenched Internet Arms, released in April of 2019. Armed with a face full of glitter and a mane of electric yellow hair, the band's latest effort ponders the age of information and the effect of digital intimacy, and was subsequently championed by the likes of KEXP, FLOOD, Aquarium Drunkard, and more.
