Last month we announced the return of Anna Burch and her sophomore album If You're Dreaming, out April 3rd. Tracked with producer Sam Evian in his home studio in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York, Burch and Evian worked with self-imposed time limitations to establish a sharper focus and get to the core of the new songs. Where her debut album, Quit the Curse, had been a rush of inspired songwriting followed by a drawn-out process of arrangement and mixing. With recurring themes of isolation, weariness and longing, these tracks deliver an emotional arc with a delicate but uncompromising execution.
Today we get another self-directed and captivating music video, this time for new single "Party's Over". Premiering over at NYLON alongside an interview with Anna – "If You're Dreaming pivots into deeper poetic lyricism and darker metaphors, all strung together with the same lush vocals. The song itself is an anthem for the emotionally exhausted. Like a mantra, she breezily repeats, "I'm so tired" over a 12-string guitar, which lends a certain '60s sound that she translated straight into the accompanying visuals."
Of the video Anna shared -
"I originally thought I wanted the video to be a runaway bride scenario – I was already picturing it during the recording process, but I somehow pivoted to a runaway groom with the introduction of the sort of creature from the black lagoon monster scaring him off. The song's lyrics have a bit of a voyeuristic aspect and the 12 string guitar is super 60s sounding so that's probably what inspired the scenario. Also, a lot of my close friends and family have gotten engaged or married in the last year so that's been on the surface of my psyche."
Even at its most introverted, If You’re Dreaming is always warm and present. It’s a deliberately drawn chapter of Burch’s work, trading in the wild-eyed and sometimes neurotic party hopping of Quit The Curse for a more solitary walk after midnight. Daring and clear-headed, these songs cut deeper in their subtleties. If You’re Dreaming moves with intention, taking its time revealing new layers of sophistication and growth in Burch’s always charming songcraft.
