Experimental Austin band, alexalone, have shared a brand new single and lyric video for their cover of “Rainbow,” originally written by legendary Japanese band, Boris (ボリス). Led by founding songwriter Alex Peterson, the band's recording of “Rainbow” features the contributing talents of bandmates Sam Jordan, Mari Maurice (more eaze), and Drewsky Hulett – the same lineup behind their Polyvinyl debut, ALEXALONEWORLD.
With a laid back, locked-groove beat that gently gallops upon the ride and snare, alexalone’s reinterpretation of the Boris classic lures you into a trance with Mari Maurice’s softly synthesized vocals, before delivering a blissfully fuzzed out solo. The end result is a kind of homage that flourishes in its simplicity. Reminiscing about the first time they saw Boris live (performing a drone set) at Austin’s beloved End of an Ear record store, Peterson explains –
“I had never seen that type of music played live before – and it was amazing. CD’s were falling off of the shelves from the volume and vibrations, and in the middle of the set they switched it up and played “Rainbow.” After that show I started really listening to the record “Rainbow” and that was how I became aware of Michio Kurihara (whose guitar & ebow playing I now often emulate). “Rainbow” sent me into a Boris rabbit hole that I have never really come out of and Boris is such a big inspiration for me because of the way they follow their interests record to record.”
Speaking about the collaborative effort behind this recording, Peterson also shared “Drewsky played the ripping guitar solo & Mari sang the sick vocals which are usually my roles, so seeing that they could be occupied by other people so well in this band was very exciting. It was the first time the four of us worked on something that wasn’t our ALEXALONEWORLD record and it is a fun document of the short time before Hannah joined the band, as well as a tribute to one of my favorite bands of all time.”
